Plot[]

The movie begins in a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility where they study the Tesseract to harness it's power. Nick Fury and Maria Hill arrive to be greeted by Agent Coulson who gives them a report on strange signals coming from the Tesseract. Fury, Coulson, and Hill enter the facility to find Professor Erik Selvig and Simon Williams preforming tests on the Tesseract. Selvig says that it's power was getting more distant from it's source every time they tried to harness it, that it was calling something. Fury calls for Agent Barton, who was watching the experiment from a high point in the base. Barton tells him that the cube was signalling some kind of wormhole, before it summoned a wormhole. Out of the wormhole came Loki, who was thought to be dead after the battle with Thor on Asgard. After Fury asked him to put down his scepter, Loki blasted at him and brainwashed Barton and Selvig. Simon attacked Loki in an attempt to defeat him, but was quickly defeated and tosses aside. Fury contacts Agent Hill and informs her that Barton has been brainwashed and Loki escaped with the Tesseract, and Hill and Coulson go on a chase for the Tesseract. Hill and Coulson chased Loki through an underground driveway, but before they could get close to steal the Tesseract back from them, Barton targeted them with an explosive arrow and blew up their car, thankfully Hill and Coulson were able to make it out before anyone got hurt. Loki, Barton, and Selvig got away with the Tesseract, and Fury orders Hill to contact everyone for their team.

Somewhere else in the world Natasha Romanoff is being interrogated by a gang of Russian crooks. But before the interrogation can begin, Coulson calls her to inform her that Barton has turned. Romanoff quickly defeats her torturers and Coulson informs her of Dr. Bruce Banner in Kolkata, India. While recruiting Banner, Romanoff tells him about the Tesseract and the mission of defeating Loki. At first he's hesitant to help because he believes that the Hulk would cause danger, but after some persuasion from Romanoff, he helps them deal with Loki. After stabilizing an electrical cord inside of the towers' Arc Reactor, Tony Stark returns home, and J.A.R.V.I.S. tells him that he has been contacted by Agent Coulson and Agent Hill. He tries multiple times to decline their offers to join their team, but they eventually get him to join through Pepper having a personal relationship with each other. Fury himself meets up with Steve Rogers in a gym, where he talks with him about his past with HYDRA and his loss of Bucky, all of which still haunts him. Steve tells Fury that he knows about the Tesseract and thinks that they should have left it in the ocean. Romanoff and Banner fly to a hovercraft and meets up with Simon, and shortly after Fury arrives with Steve, who greets them all. Coulson and Hill arrive in a helicopter with Stark right behind them in his new suit. The hovercraft then takes to the sky revealing it as the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier. Steve, Tony, Simon, Banner, and Romanoff have a mission debrief on the Tesseract and Loki. Shortly after, Loki is heard to be spotted somewhere in the city, and Steve takes off to fight him alone. In Loki's location, Barton needs to break into a secret hidden S.H.I.E.L.D. base, but he needs a distraction to avoid attention from himself. Loki hands Barton a device, which he has two of. He approaches an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and places the device on his eye, which both scans and shreds it, killing him in the process. Barton is able to use the device the create a projection of said eye, opening the door to the base.

Providing Barton with the distraction, Loki forces the civilians to kneel before him claiming that humans are pathetic, weak, and created to be ruled. However, one brave man in a wheelchair calls him out, saying that human will never bow to a man like him. Attempting to kill him as a demonstration of his power, Loki shoots at the man. Fortunately, Captain America jumps in and deflects the blast with his S.H.I.E.L.D., as the Captain tells Loki that he didn't agree with one man standing above others. The two battle, with Loki having the Captain beat. As he prepared to murder Captain America, he was suddenly shot by a blast from above. Coming to his aid was Simon Williams, and Tony Stark, who got Loki to surrender, not knowing that this was part of his plan. Loki boards a S.H.I.E.L.D. quinjet, piloted by Romanoff, while Steve, Tony, and Simon share words about their experiences with unusual threats. This chat is short-lived, as a few strikes of lightning hit the quinjet, worrying Loki, as he's not fond of what follows. After the lightning, Thor appears on the quinjet. He grabs Loki and quickly flies away. Angered by this event, Tony suits up and quickly flies after, disregarding both Steve and Simon's offer on a plan. Simon flies out after Tony, while Steve equips a parachute and chases after them. Thor drops Loki on a nearby cliff. He informs Loki of the state Asgard has been in since his disappearance, and everyone thought him dead. Before Thor could take Loki back to Asgard, he is attacked by Iron Man. Tony and Thor have a verbal fight, before being interrupted by Simon Williams. Simon gives Thor the chance to leave without a fight, which Thor accepts, before, once again, acting brashly to Tony calling him a "tourist". Thor attacks Tony, leading Tony to fight back. Simon tries to interfere, but gets shot back by Tony, and a three-way fight ensues between Tony, Thor, and Simon across the jungle. The three exchange blows, before getting hit by the Captain's shield, stopping the fight from escalating. Steve tells Thor to put his hammer down, and Thor, seeing this as a challenge, leaped into the air, and slammed his hammer down on the Captain's shield, causing a massive shockwave. The fight over, the heroes see that surprisingly, Loki has not left.

The four of them take Loki to the Helicarrier, where Fury explains the cage he built for Loki. With Loki's sceptre in the lab, Tony and Bruce examine it, while Thor explains it's power to Romanoff and Simon. Separated from the others, Steve did some digging through S.H.I.E.L.D. files, where he found their plans for the Tesseract. Back in the lab, Tony is curious to what S.H.I.E.L.D.'s using the Tesseract for, cue Steve angrily coming in and revealing that they were going to use it to develop weapons, claiming that nothing has changed. This fact angers Thor, Tony, Simon and Bruce, who all question why. Fury explains that it's because of the incident with Thor in New Mexico, viewing other-worldly beings as a threat, and the Tesseract as a measure of defense. This enables an argument between everyone, and Bruce gets especially heated. After being told by Fury to calm down, he reveals the the cage designed for Loki was originally for him, in case they needed to kill him, which he states that they can't due to his previous attempts at suicide being foiled by his other half. He offers to show everyone how he stays calm, before being told by Tony to put the sceptre down, seemingly under the influence of Loki.
