Plot[]

One year ago, Thanos completed his quest to gather the Infinity Stones, effectively destroying half of all living creatures. The Mad Titan has retired into a peaceful life with his love Lady Death by his side. Loki and Yon-Rogg take what they believe to be their rightful thrones, ruling over Asgard and Hala respectively. Nebula, Corvus Glaive, and Supergiant, rule over earth with an iron fist, bringing chaos and destruction to those who still inhabit it.

Abigail Brand, now short on soldiers, is forced to break her code and assemble a group of heroes to protect the remaining survivors; Spider-Man, Adam Warlock, Doctor Strange, Star-Lord, Kitty Pryde, Black Widow, Namor, Drax, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Storm, The Thing, Human Torch, Beast, Rogue, Winter Soldier, Luke Cage, and The Punisher.

Frank Castle and Ben Grimm patrol the streets of New York, when they find a young boy running from a fleet of Chitauri. The two heroes intercept, holding off the alien army. The boy reaches into his backpack, pulling out a Nova Corps helmet which allows him to take out the rest of the army. The boy introduces himself as Sam Alexander, before Ben insists that they need to get him medical attention.

Elsewhere, against the orders of Brand, Adam Warlock sets out to surprise Thanos and retrieve the Infinity Stones when he’s not expecting it. On the planet Titan, Thanos lives a peaceful life farming, when Warlock crashes into the field, quickly greeting Thanos with a punch that knocks him to his knees. Warlock demands that Thanos hands over the stones. The Mad Titan simply laughs, pulling out the Gauntlet and trapping Warlock inside of the Soul Gem.

Black Widow leads a rehabilitation rally for survivors alongside Scarlet Witch, Vision, Bucky Barnes, Human Torch, and Spider-Man. Suddenly, Corvus Glaive and his army attack the rally, killing dozens of civilians. Vision attacks Glaive, but is outmatched easily. Scarlet Witch intervenes before Vision is destroyed, using her power to rip Glaive apart from the inside. Vision thanks Wanda with a warm embrace.

Castle, Grimm, and Alexander arrive at Valhalla, a safe space for refugees formed by Jane Foster and Amadeus Cho. Sam is taken into care, where he meets fellow refugee fighters She-Hulk and Deadpool.

Peter Quill notices that Adam Warlock has been gone for a prolonged amount of time, traveling with his new girlfriend Kitty Pryde, and Drax to receive backup from Black Widow. Natasha insists that The Avengers need to strike Supergiant and Nebula fast now that Corvus Glaive is out of the picture. Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Nightcrawler, and Storm volunteer to join The Guardians in tracking down Warlock, jumping into an old quinjet.

Black Widow knows that her forces are going to be outmatched by The Chituri, deciding it’s finally time to seek the help of an old friend. Natasha and Brand arrive at the rundown Stark Mansion. The two eventually find a lowly Tony Stark wallowing with a bottle in his basement. Tony breaks down, furious that he wasn’t around to help when the world needed him. Brand aggressively blames Stark for his recklessness, but Natasha encourages him that Pepper wouldn’t want him to wallow in sadness, insisting that it’s not too late to change things.

The Guardian’s team arrives on Titan, ready to finish this once and for all. Quill barges into Thanos’ hut, demanding he turn over the stones. Thanos insists that Quill return to Earth before he gets himself hurt, but Star-Lord remains persistent, striking Thanos in the head. Nightcrawler and Drax quickly teleport to the scene, attacking Thanos from behind. Doctor Strange and Spider-Man use their abilities to retrain Thanos while Kitty and Storm attempt to remove the Gauntlet. Lady Death watches as Thanos struggles against the attackers, refusing to assist him. Thanos begs Death for help, but she now sees him as weak, leaving him to struggle alone. After moments of attacking, the heroes are able to remove the Gauntlet, leaving Thanos ashamed and angry.

On Earth, Iron Man and Black Widow lead a group of heroes into battle against Supergiant’s forces. Thanos, angered that his conquest for all for nothing now seeks revenge on those who tore it apart, contacting Loki for assistance. The Guardians run for their ship, when the bifrost opens on Titan, sending hundreds of Chitrui into battle with the Guardians. Spider-Man attempts to draw them out, leading a pack of Chituri to a wreckage of a spacecraft where Peter finds a symbiote, seemingly calling out to him.

Spider-Man soon joins back up with the others, now sporting a fully black suit, thanks to the symbiote bonding with him. However, this new suit isn’t enough to save the day as the heroes continue to struggle against the Chituri. Quill confidently orders Drax to open a portal, saying a final goodbye to his allies as the leader of the Guardians leads the Chituri into the portal, seemingly sacrificing himself so the others can get away.

Thanos and Loki attack Earth, raining fire upon the Avengers. Valhalla Sanctuary is among the places destroyed by the attack. The Thing and She-Hulk are able to stabilize the building while Punisher and Deadpool evacuate the survivors. Jane Foster takes a headcount outside of the rubble, noticing that Sam Alexander is still inside. Amadeus insists that it’s too late for him, but Jane goes back inside anyway, finding Sam cowering below a pile of rocks. Jane attempts to lift the rubble off of Sam, but the rest of the building comes crashing down on them. The others watch in horror as the building crashes from the outside. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning strikes the building, and a glowing Jane rises from the rubble with Sam in her arms, she is now worthy.

The Guardians return to Earth, finding Thanos and his army laying Siege. Doctor Strange tells the others that with the Gauntlet, they should be able to bring everyone back with a simple snap of the finger. Drax volunteers, stating that he’s the only one strong enough to withstand the Stones. Drax shoves his hand into the Gauntlet, snapping his fingers as power surges through his veins.

All hope seems lost when nothing comes of the snap and the battle still rages on. An inexperienced Jane Foster attempts to hold back Thanos with Mjolnier, but is easily defeated. Iron Man and Doctor Strange intervene, putting up a fight against the Titan. Suddenly, Captain America’s shield enters the frame, knocking Thanos back. Steve Rogers, followed by Captain Marvel and Cyclops arrive. A loud battle cry can be heard in the distance as we see Thor, Black Panther, The X-Men, and everyone who was decimated by Thanos. They’ve been snapped back and are ready to fight. Captain America and Iron Man stand side by side, simultaneously uttering the words “Avengers… Assemble!”

Adam Warlock is left in charge of the Gauntlet, however in the chaos, Nebula is able to knock it from his possession. Gamora cries out, begging her sister not to do this, but it’s too late, Nebula snaps her fingers. The heroes stand seemingly defeated once again, until Thanos’ army begins to disappear one by one. Thanos confronts Nebula, calling her a fool. Nebula responds, “I will not let you control me any longer” as she begins to fade away herself. Thanos stands alone, all of his army decimated, with all of the heroes looking on in shock. Thanos takes a seat, preparing for the inevitable as he begins to fade away.

Gamora mourns the loss of her sister as the other heroes clean up the streets. Months later, The Avengers hold a funeral for all of the fallen heroes in Thanos’ attack; Wonder Man, Phil Coulson, Nick Fury, Iron Fist, Quake, Wong, Bruce Banner, Quicksilver, Fandral, Star-Lord, and Nebula. Abigail Brand becomes head of Shield, although her intentions conflict with those of The Avengers. Kitty insists that Quill is still out there, leaving the X-Men to join the Guardians and search for him, also being joined by Beta Ray Bill and Sam Alexander. Thor and Jane reunite, traveling with Sif to go reclaim Asgard from Loki. Thanos is gone, but the world will never be the same.

In a post credits scene, Peter Parker attends dinner with Gwen Stacy and his Aunt May, although something about him is different, the symbiote is beginning to change him.
